Number 1 Right Now on KCRA A*List

The Race So Far

Right now, thanks to you, our store fans, we're holding steady at #1 in the Bookstore category in KCRA's A*List competition. Last week we moved from 16th to 9th in about 30 minutes. Then in the next few minutes we moved into the #2 spot. By March 14, at 1 a.m., we took the #1 spot.

So now the hard work begins - staying at #1. Yesterday we fell into the second place spot, but quickly regained #1. That means, however, that someone is hot on our trail.

Vote

To participate, please visit our page on the KCRA A*List website. We hope you'll consider voting for us, however we know that there are many fine shops that promote comic books in Sacramento. It would be amazing to be #1 at the end of the contest in 45 days - it would be even more amazing for the top 5 spots to all be comic book shops!

Here's a look at the current standings in the Book Store Category:

Introducing The "Vision Machine" Remix Writing Contest

The "Vision Machine" Remix Writing Contest starts February 1st. It's a great way to have fun writing and maybe get recognized. Ben - you know, the guy who owns Empire's Comics Vault - is going to remix "Vision Machine" also. Of course, he can't win any prizes, but he'll be in it with you. Here are some things to know.

Vision_machine_image
Pencils by R.B. Silva

WHAT THE CONTEST IS ABOUT

Imagine taking a graphic novel, erasing all the text and word balloons, keeping only the art, and then plugging in your own story. That's the contest. Take an unlettered copy of Greg Pak's "Vision Machine" and add your own story. You've got two months to do it. 1st place wins $100. 2nd place wins $50 in comics. 3rd place wins $25 in comics. All submissions must be received by March 31, 2012. Please read the official contest rules for complete details.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

1. Download the official entry form. You'll need to include this with your writing submission. This form is required with all submissions.

2. Download an unlettered copy of Greg Pak's "Vision Machine." Add your story to the art - beautiful art by R.B. Silva. We're not accepting scripts, so your story must be added to the art, and you can do that any way you'd like - with a pen, using software, cutting out word balloons and pasting them onto the art. Also, your story can be of any genre you'd like - comedy, horror, sic-fi, whatever. Obviously, your story has to be original, you know, no copying anyone else's homework, or works that are protected by copyrights. There's more about that in the official contest rules.

3. Submit your completed official entry form and your story with art to empirescv@gmail.com or ship to Empire's Comics Vault, 1120 Fulton Avenue, Suite K, Sacramento, CA 95825.

TWO THINGS YOUR SHOULD KNOW - TAKEN FROM THE OFFICIAL CONTEST RULES

(1) "Vision Machine" is distributed under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial Share-Alike 3.0 Unported License that lets you copy, share, and remix the book non-commercially as long as you credit Pak Man Productions and release your remixes/derivative material under the same Creative Commons license. To view a copy of this license, visit http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/ or send a letter to Creative Commons, 444 Castro Street, Suite 900, Mountain View, California, 94041, USA.

(2) Essentially, that first point means, you agree to permit your remix of "Vision Machine" to be copied, shared and remixed non-commercially, online and offline; and since Greg Pak got this whole enchilada cooking in the first place, no matter how far down the line "Vision Machine" get remixed, we credit Pak Man Productions. Sounds fair to us! Plus, you never know, if your story is amazing, good things could happen for you. Maybe. So go for it.

The official contest rules are available online. We recommend reading those rules. Read them at http://empirescomicsvault.blogspot.com/2012/01/vision-machine-remix-2012-contest-rules.html.

SPECIAL THANKS

Pak Man Production's very own Greg Pak has done and is doing some amazing things. Are you familiar with "Planet Hulk," "Incredible Hercules," "Red Skull Incarnate," and "Magneto Testament"? Ay-may-zing. Amazing, and honestly, we think he's a great model to follow when it comes promoting comics. We also like his healthy and active life online, from his blog to the novel he's writing on Twitter to his early adopter Google+ activities. So, if you don't know Greg, please get to know him. Last but not least, how many other writers do you know who are excited about you remixing their work? So, thanks, Greg. You're the man… the Pac Man.

Where do we go from here...?

This last weekend was Sac-Con and this coming weekend is 24 Hour Comic Day! That means we are right in the middle of a very creative time for local comic writers and artists!  This is a much needed boost for me since 2011 has been the hardest year to date for the shop. Because of this ECV Press got pushed to the wayside. What does that mean exactly? It means I had to forgo all conventions this year and I have not devoted ANY time to my love of writing and publishing comics. That is changing as of now.

The store is back on it's feet after the fire and the move and as things stabilize in my life I realize just how much working on ECV Press projects means to me. It doesn't matter if it is simply writing a story or editing one of our writer. It could be formatting pages for the web or replying to emails. Just moving things along for The Continuum Universe is like a sedative. So fast forwarding past all the sappy stuff...

Here is what you can look forward to!

1) The printing of R&E #4

2) The printing of The Continuum Universe #4

3) The printing of The Hunters #3

4) Webcomics have started for a 44 part Relic & Ego story taking place between issues 2 and 3. These are in a newspaper strip style and will be available every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The first 3 are up now and Monday 10-3-11 will feature part 4.

5) Speaking of webcomics there are 98 available now! 44 pages of Spades action, 47 pages of Strangelight (this is all prequel story taking place before their debut in The Continuum Universe #2), 6 pages of Invisible War and 1 Holiday Special!

6) There are 86 completed webcomics featuring all of our characters, and some that have not yet appeared in our books, waiting to be posted!

7) Myself and the other ECV Press writers are putting together comprehensive Bios for all our characters. History, powers, stats and teasers to be included.

8) The website will probably be getting an overhaul soon to make it streamlined and much easier to navigate.

Thank you all for your support, encouragement, critiques, interest and time. It is much appreciated by myself and the other members of ECV Press.

Have a great weekend and keep your eyes peeled for all we have in store!

ECV's 1st shippment to Denmark!

We shipped off our 1st package to Denmark yesterday. Thank you, Michael Pilgaard, for the support. We met at the last SDCC and when we were not there this year he ordered the remaining books he was missing.  Look for more ECV Press titles soon.  I know I have been saying that but I just met with one of my writers and have a sit down with all 3 at the beginning of next month. Thank you all for your patience and support in this long but rewarding endeavor.

Episode 33 goes up TODAY with a new episode available every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until all 44 episodes are done. Take a look, let us know what you think and enjoy!.

Triad Pin-Up by Mark MachMann

Triad's Alexandra by Mark MachMann
As I sit down to do a little writing today I thought it would be a great time to show you a pin-up done by a Sacramento local Mark MachMann. Mark is an Empire's Comics Vault 24 Hour Comic Day regular and last year he did a couple ECV Press pin-ups during the grueling endeavor. You may have seen this piece before since Mark was good enough to make a "we are moving" poster for Empire's Comics Vault with this pin-up.  Thanks, Mark! make sure you check out his artwork and upcoming projects at...

ECV Press wheels turning again!

Hi, all. It has been a while since I had the time or energy to devote any effort to the ECV Press machine but that is quickly changing. I will not bore you with the long and excuse ridden details of the last five months and only say that we are getting back on track. Look for many more updates on this blog, Facebook, deviantart and our website as well as webcomics galore over the next few months. The best part of our renewed vigor is that Relic & Ego #4 will be going to print soon and The Continuum Universe #4 will be following that shortly. Thank you all for your time, interest and support. We could not do it without you.
